Why You may want a Domain Name

There are several advantages to a domain name:

  • Your web service and e-mail addresses can be consistent (e.g., www.you.com and someone@you.com).
  • A domain name is shorter and more memorable than a URL under your ISP's domain name (e.g., www.you.com vs. www.ispxyz.com/you/).
  • Most importantly:  You have the freedom to move your web hosting and e-mail at will from one Internet Service Provider to another without having to change your URL and email addresses.  If your URL is www.ispxyz.com/you/, you have to be a customer of ispxyz.  If you become unhappy with the service you are getting and want to switch, you'll have to change your URL and email, throwing away all the work you did you publicize the first ones.  If you have your own domain name, you're not stuck.
